This isn't simply about animals as such, it also takes a look at the history of the zoo.
A history that started from when the eminent Edwardian philanthropist and benefactor, Herbert Whitley brought his early (childhood) interest in the breeding of birds and how his principles still govern the activities of the zoo today.
As part of a wealthy brewing family Whitley could indulge his interests in breeding and went on to breed champion animals and birds of all persuasions, domestic and wild. His list of winners in pigeon showing competitions is awesome.
We also see how the zoo developed from a zoological garden into the conservation and breeding centre of world renown and importance.
